Implementation of the Full-Day School Education Model in Shaping Students' Religious Character at SMP Muhammadiyah Purwodadi, Grobogan

Abstract

Many Islamic educational institutions in Indonesia—including schools under the auspices of Muhammadiyah—are currently implementing "full-day school" policies. This approach aims to combine the enhancement of academic quality with the cultivation of students' religious character by extending the duration of the school day. However, there is no consensus regarding the model's success; some studies note positive outcomes such as improved discipline in religious observance and increased student engagement in religious activities, while others highlight obstacles—such as student fatigue and a lack of supporting facilities—that hinder optimal program implementation. This article conceptually examines the implementation of the full-day school model in shaping students' religious character at SMP Muhammadiyah Purwodadi, Grobogan, drawing upon implementation experiences at other Islamic and Muhammadiyah-affiliated schools. The study employs a qualitative approach based on a literature review, which will be followed by a field-based case study design; data collection in the subsequent phase will involve observation, interviews, and document analysis. Preliminary findings indicate that the effectiveness of the full-day school model in shaping religious character is heavily influenced by three key elements: an integrated curriculum design, consistent religious practice routines, and the management of student fatigue—all of which require further empirical verification at the research site.
